| Week in Games: Anything Else Going on This Week? May 31, 2009 at 6:00 pm |
| Releasing during E3 always strikes me as risky. Gamer interest might be high, but everyone's talking about what's coming out in the next year, not what's coming out now. That said, this coming week you can pick up Red Faction: Guerrilla or Fuel on consoles; The Sims and Terminator: Salvation on PC, and some catz and dogz on the DS The count: Four for PC and DS, three for 360 and PS3, one for Wii and zero for Neo-Geo. In just a couple of days, E3 will reveal just about every major game you will be able to play in the next year. For action-adventure (and RPG) fans, these are the big... Nintendo will release Wii Fit Plus, recently trademarked in Japan, and a new Mario game later this year, both for the Wii, according to a report from Japan's regularly reliable Nikkei newspaper. IndieCade, this year, is Oct. 1 to Oct. 4, but 25 games out of the hundreds submitted so far will be previewed at the festival's E3 booth. This will be the first U.S. preview of games for IndieCade, whose inaugural festival was last year. E3 2009: Aided by The Soup host Joel McHale, the French publisher rolls out its most au courant games in Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES--So what's likely to happen at Ubisoft's... If someone can pull off the needle-in-a-haystack search for a kid who managed a game parlor in the Indian Himalayas 10 years ago, a "mysterious benefactor" will send the arcade a Dreamcast.

| Revealed via leaked survey just over a month ago, Mass Effect for the iPhone seeks to fill in the story of a couple characters appearing in upcoming sequel, Mass Effect 2. So far, the little we know from the BioWare Blog paints the picture of a game that fills in the gaps between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, following the story of Jacob Taylor. The New Musical Express, which is sort of the UK analog to the US' Rolling Stone, says it got its hands on the list of 84(!) bands in Guitar Hero 5. All they say is who is playing, not what songs will be played. The July issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine (PTOM) features God of War 3 on its cover, and inside includes the first new info. on the game since Sony unveiled it back in February. We certainly hope Electronic Arts built up some tough skin during the whole Spore piracy pandemic, as it looks like they'll be facing similar buccaneering with their upcoming plumbob-equipped title, Sims 3. The new PSP Go, leaked just before E3 thanks to the June issue of Sony's own Qore, is tiny little thing. Bigger than an iPhone—but not by much—and slimmer than the original PSP.

| Full Guitar Hero 5 Artists List Revealed May 31, 2009 at 4:46 pm |
|
We know Guitar Hero 5 is coming this year, and now Activision has revealed the full list of artists that'll be included in the latest installment of the music game franchise. The enormous list comes by way of their official Guitar Hero 5 website (via VG247), and although it doesn't offer any specific songs from each artist, it does offer an idea of the amount of variety to expect. The New Musical Express, which is sort of the UK analog to the US' Rolling Stone, says it got its hands on the list of 84(!) bands in Guitar Hero 5. All they say is who is playing, not what songs will be played. When Activision announced Guitar Hero 5, we knew little more than the game would include some notes, and possibly a popular diddy or two. Now, we know all sorts of stuff, like the proposed "Band Moments" and the game's release date (9/1/09). Manos arriba, who loves robots? We sure did this week. Other highlights included the return (of sorts) of Atari, and Hideo Kojima giving us all lessons in redacting sensitive documents. | The New Musical Express, which is sort of the UK analog to the US' Rolling Stone, says it got its hands on the list of 84(!) bands in Guitar Hero 5. All they say is who is playing, not what songs will be played. We had a partial list of confirmed bands when the game's release date was announced Tuesday. NME's web presence posted the list earlier today; they didn't say how they'd gotten it. But if it's accurate, then it's quite a range (Iron Maiden to Elton John) and a hell of a long list. When Activision announced Guitar Hero 5, we knew little more than the game would include some notes, and possibly a popular diddy or two. Now, we know all sorts of stuff, like the proposed "Band Moments" and the game's release date (9/1/09). | Rumor: Next Halo Game is "Halo: Reach"? May 31, 2009 at 11:00 am |

Well, now someone's found a cache of since-deleted Bungie forum posts on this subject. As you can see, for a brief time there was a forum for something called "Halo: Reach." A 2001 novel called "Halo: The Fall of Reach" is official, canonical, and functions as the prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. The Kojima "NEXT" countdown page continues to toy with fans like puppets. When the clock revealed Big Boss it seemed the mystery was mostly solved: it would be a Metal Gear game, likely a prequel. Never mind that BioShock was a game that told its story through broken furniture and level design. Book publishers Tor think you can wring a good novel out of it. Having already made good game-related money with their Halo series... We're still not sure why anyone would want to retrofit video games with last-gen tech and turn them into books, but sci-fi/fantasy publisher Tor has apparently had a lot of success with the practice lately, with franchises like Halo and Dragon Age.
