Microsoft publishes maximum Windows 7 netbooks specs

One step forward, one step back: just as we were getting ready to celebrate Microsoft's decision to remove the three-app limit from Windows 7 Starter Edition, we're hearing that Redmond is still planning to impose strict limits on what types of machines get to run the stripped-down build. Just like today's max XP specs, things are pretty weak all around: Window 7 Starter machines will max out at 10.2-inch screens, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drives or 64GB SSDs, and single-core processors under 2GHz.

Boffins are teaching football-playing robots how to fall properly.

Brocade loses $63.1m on record revenues
May 22, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Storage networking vendor Brocade announced record half billion dollar plus revenues for its second fiscal 2009 quarter but nonetheless made a $63.1m loss. Analyst revenue expectations were comfortably exceeded.

Revenues were $506.3m, up 43 per cent on the year-ago quarter, which is very gratifying, and 17 per cent higher than the previous quarter, which - in the middle of the recession - is almost startling. It was the first full quarter combining results from Brocade and the acquired Foundry Network. The data storage revenues were 58 percent of the total,

Amazon cloud welcomes airplanes of data
May 22, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Amazon's cloud is infinitely large. At least in theory. But bandwidth to the cloud is not. If you like, you could upload a full terabyte of data to that data center in the sky. But even over a T1 connection, it would take you a good 80 days.

Amazon realizes that's a long time, so it's now giving you the option of sending your data through mail. Not email - mail mail.

Google to Give Libraries Say on Prices for Scanned Books
May 22, 2009 at 7:00 pm

The University of Michigan has become the first library to amend its book scanning deal with Google, following a proposed settlement that Google reached last year with authors and publishers that sued it.

As part of the amended deal, other institutions can pay a subscription to access the University of Michigan's digitized books. Since Google will set those fees, the University of Michigan will be able to challenge the fee and the parties will settle any disagreements in arbitration.

Sprint: Palm Pre shortages are speculation but demand could exceed supply

Sprint: Palm Pre shortages are speculation but demand could exceed supply

As the Palm Pre fiiiiiiiiinally nears launch, there has been plenty of talk with regards to supply and demand lately. Is the Pre going to be as popular as everyone thinks? Did production issues prevent Palm from having enough units ready for launch? Are Palm and Sprint shorting deliveries to help ensure a sellout? Here at BGR we've gotten some pretty firm intel regarding Best Buy's stock of Pre handsets at launch, but what about Sprint's stock? Can we expect similar shortages? The following is an official statement from Sprint:

  • Best Buy Mobile to give away 10 Palm Pre handsets to Reward Zone members
Well what do we have here? Apparently Best Buy Reward Zone members will be getting a little extra treat courtesy of Best Buy Mobile. Between May 31st and June 6th, Reward Zone members can go to myrewardzone.
  • Palm Pre lands on Best Buy website… for $849
As if we didn't see this one coming, the Palm Pre has made its official debut on Best Buy's website. The handset is sporting a super-high $849 price tag which is apparently a deterrent.
  • Pre-order your enV Touch today from Best Buy Mobile or snag one early from Verizon Wireless
Well, it certainly is not the BlackBerry Storm but the LG enV Touch must rank high up on the Verizon Wireless ladder as it is seemingly getting the same pre-order treatment.
  • Best Buy Mobile to skip rebate, sell Palm Pre for $199.99 outright
Best Buy may not be launching the Pre exclusively, but it's probably the place to go if you're scouting one come June 6th. Why? Pretty simple, really -- you'll leave the joint with an extra Benjamin in your purse.

Intel's Netbook Plans Pave the Way for Smartphone Aspirations

In this anemic economy, selling tens of millions of any new product is a rare bright spot. But that's exactly what's happened in the case of netbooks, those small, light and relatively inexpensive notebook computers. Intel benefits greatly from this market, as its Atom line of CPUs powers roughly 90 percent of the devices in this class. The old "Intel Inside" tagline now includes netbooks along with desktops and laptops. Don't be surprised when it applies to smartphones as well.

RidetheCity.com is a service that maps the best bike routes in New York. You add a starting point and an end point and the service finds dedicated bike lanes, greenways, and other "safe" routes for you to take on your two-wheeler through the mean streets of the city.

We've just been given permission to let you folks beat up their latest incarnation, RidetheCity 2.0 with a few interesting updates. Co-creator Jordan Anderson reports:

  • Intel's Netbook Plans Pave the Way for Smartphone Aspirations
In this anemic economy, selling tens of millions of any new product is a rare bright spot. But that's exactly what's happened in the case of netbooks, those small, light and relatively inexpensive notebook computers.

Facebook simplifies currency ahead of wider roll-out

Credits, Facebook's nascent virtual currency of sorts, is getting a simple change tonight. The company is marking down items in its gift store from 100 credits to 10 credits, and reducing users' corresponding number of credits.

Facebook users who are worried about losing the last zero off their credit supplies can take comfort in the fact that they can still buy the same number of gifts as they had before. So if you had 200 credits, you'll have 20 credits now - but those 100-credit gifts are now 10 credits a pop. Prices, adjusted for the change, are the same $1 per 10 credits.

The End of Newspapers, In Chart Form

I'm still not exactly sure why Google (GOOG) has become the chief suspect in the "Who Killed Newspapers" investigation playing out before our very eyes. Because it's quite clear to me that the real baddie here is bespectacled, mild-mannered Craig Newmark, whose eponymous free service blew up the industry's most profitable line of business: Classified advertising.

Rogers to sell HTC Dream, Magic for $199.99 on contract

Canadians have had to wait quite a while to get their first official taste of Android, and even longer to know how much it'd cost, but it looks like that last detail has now finally been cleared up. According to The Boy Genius Report, Rogers will be asking the ever popular $199.99 for both the HTC Dream and HTC Magic on a three-year contract when they launch on June 2nd, or a hefty $649.99 off-contract. As Boy Genius points out, that's actually $100 more than the previously rumored off-contract price, which briefly spurred talk of a too-good-to-be-true $149.99 on-contract price.

Analyst forecasts Apple Kindle-killer for 2010

Apple may have a downer on netbooks, but that won't stop it releasing a 7-10in tablet in the coming months, one analyst has forecast. It's some way off, though.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster is a long time Apple watcher well known among the firms fans for his product predictions. The Pirate Party, whose goal is to "fundamentally reform copyright law, get rid of the patent system and ensure that citizens' rights to privacy are respected", has more than doubled its support with Swedish voters, rising from 3...

Hitachi's Mobile Hi-Vision Cam Wooo cellphone does 720p video recording

While it won't be the first handset to capture 720p video (hello, OmniaHD!), Hitachi's Mobile Hi-Vision Cam Woo is still apt to garner quite a bit of attention. As the leaked images hosted down below show, this clever flip phone packs 1,280 x 720 video recording, a 5 megapixel sensor, HDMI interface and a microSDHC slot for good measure. A generous tipster has informed us that said phone is slated to launch this coming Monday on KDDI, though we fully expect that envious North Americans won't ever get to toy with one on their home turf. For shame.

Russians offer hackintosh netbook

Want an Asus Eee PC 1000H to run Mac OS X? New Russian hackintosh supplier RussianMac is now offering just that.

It's not clear whether the Atom-based netbook - or, indeed, any of the other desktop and mobile systems RussianMac is offering - comes with the Apple operating system pre-installed or you have to do it yourself, from a legit, boxed copy of the OS, using a supplied utility.

  • ASUS Eee PC 1000HV resurfaces with Atom N280, HD 3450
Another day, another entrant in the mile-long list of Eee PC netbooks. This one, however, is a curious add. You see, the Eee PC 1000HV originally came to light way back in July of 2008, when no fewer than 23 Eee model names were casually leaked out.
