Legendary Saab exec Bob Sinclair dies:
May 12, 2009 at 12:12 am

Legendary Saab exec Bob Sinclair dies:

Bob Sinclair, the American marketing executive who pushed Saab to design more luxurious cars and created one of the Swedish automaker?s most iconic vehicles--the 900 Convertible--died on May 10 at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif., after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

In the 33-year span that ended in 1991, Sinclair worked for either of Sweden?s automakers--Saab or Volvo--in the United States. Sinclair started with Saab in1958 as a field representative and worked his way up through the marketing ranks. But he jumped to Volvo in 1961, unhappy with Saab?s plan to move its U.S. headquarters to Connecticut. Sinclair returned to Saab in 1979 to lead the U.S. operation, Saab-Scania of America.

In a recent interview discussing Tesla Motors, CEO Elon Musk didn't really reveal much new information, although he did manage to misrepresent the performance capability of the Chevy Volt, again. He refers to the Volt's range extender as a "lawn mower engine" and says highway performance "will be anemic." While the Volt will no doubt feel anemic next to a Roadster, the reality is that the 160-horsepower electric motor will provide more than adequate performance for almost anyone's needs and should accelerate to 60 mph in about 8.5-9 seconds.

General Motors' acting CEO Fritz Henderson has said the Wilmington, DE plant that currently produces the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky could be sold if a buyer was interested in producing the two roadsters. "If someone were to approach [us] with a proposal that made good sense for our people, we'd be open to it," Henderson told Autoweek. The move would ape Chrysler's plan for the Dodge Viper's production facilities, allowing another automaker to take control and continue building the niche model.

For the first time in the modern incarnation of One Lap of America, a Japanese car has claimed the top spot. After a grueling 3,400+ mile, nine racetrack odyssey around the United States, veteran "Lap Dog" Steve Rankins and "Lap Puppy" Will Taylor captured the overall trophy in their 2009 Nissan GT-R this weekend. The victory marks the first for a Nippon car since the event's 1986 running, when rallyist Karl Chevalier's Toyota Celica beat out fellow racer John Buffum's Audi 5000S wagon. OloA's timing and scoring procedures were markedly different at that point, however, as from 1985 to 1991, One Lap was essentially a time-speed-distance (TSD) rally.

Th!nk gets homologation in the Netherlands, ready to be sold in European Union

Once a vehicle has been certified for roadworthiness by any member of the European Union, that vehicle can legally be sold in any fellow member country. Such is the case with the Th!nk City, which has just officially passed vehicle inspection in the Netherlands.

Issued by the De Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW), this makes the little Th!nk City the first all-EV "real-world" electric car to be deemed fully roadworthy in the EU. The inspection certifies that the model meets or exceeds all European requirements having to do with braking, crashworthiness, lights, mirrors and emissions.

While Rex Roy showed you how beautiful the 2009 Nissan Cube can be, earlier this morning, I'll try to one-up him with a slide show from my own archive.

The weekend before last, I had the chance to spend a Southern California day in the 2009 Aston Martin V8 Vantage roadster, which sees a midlife refresh this year. The major changes occur under its sleek hood, where a 4.7-liter V-8 cranks out 420 horsepower, a boost of 11 percent over the former 4.3-liter eight. A newly mapped shift schedule for the SMG-style Sportshift transmission has been programmed in, and the Coupe and Roadster both get a sport suspension option along with new switchgear and new trim. In the case of our test car, trim options include a gorgeous gloss piano black with red-stitched black leather. (Our advice? Bring a lint-free cloth for photos.)

May 11, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Six General Motors Corp. executives have sold more than 200,000 shares of stock as the company moves toward issuing new equity to give large stakes to the U.S. government and a United Auto Workers retiree health care trust fund.

Four group vice presidents and two vice chairmen sold the stock Friday and Monday at prices ranging from $1.45 to $1.61 per share.

Utilities want Chrysler to ensure unpaid bills
May 11, 2009 at 7:33 pm

A group of utilities, including DTE Energy, MichCon and Commonwealth Edison are asking U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Arthur Gonzalez to require Chrysler to post more than $25 million in deposits to assure the automaker will pay past-due and future bills as it reorganizes.

Last week Chrysler attorneys asked the court to restrain the company's utilities from terminating service if it established a $6 million escrow account. Chrysler said in a court filing that its average monthly utility charges, assuming it emerges from bankruptcy in about 60 days, would be about $16.1 million.

Ford to sell up to 300 million shares, boost retiree health fund

Ford Motor Co. said today it plans to sell up to 300 million shares and said it would use part of the cash proceeds to fund a retiree health care trust fund.

Ford reached an agreement with the UAW in March allowing the company to fund the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association, commonly called a VEBA, with stock rather than cash.

Zapatag lets you shame bad drivers online

The next time you have a close encounter with a reckless driver, you can avoid the single finger salute and take out your frustrations online. Zapatag is a site that allows registered users (username, password, and e-mail address are all that's required) to submit the license plate information of offensive motorists for recognition or public humiliation. That's right, you can now report drunk drivers, cars that run red lights, and hybrid vehicles in the fast lane! The site has no legal connection with any jurisdiction, so your efforts will only serve to lower your blood pressure and make you feel better (and possibly avoid a bullet or two).

Chinese automaker FAW announces new-energy (read: hybrid) vehicle factory

Despite the lackluster sales from rival company BYD, Chinese automaker FAW has announced a new manufacturing plant that will specialize in building hybrid vehicles. Set to be completed in 2012, the automaker expects to build about 1,000 hybrid buses and 11,000 hybrid sedans per year at the new plant, which seems like a bit of a stretch for a company that had previously announced a steady plan to build hybrid in much smaller numbers (100 hybrid buses and 20 hybrid sedans in 2009, 200 hybrid buses and 100 hybrid sedans in 2010 and 450 hybrid buses and 200 hybrid sedans in 2011). A fleet of 12 hybrid buses are currently being tested in Dalian city, Liaoning, Northeastern China. The company expects to deliver the remaining 88 by the end of this year.

Volkswagen to debut four new models in Frankfurt?

Germany only gets its own top-tier international auto show every other year, with the Frankfurt Motor Show alternating with the Paris salon. So when the circus rolls into town, you can bet Germany's giant auto industry will embrace the opportunity to reveal their latest. Audi's tipped to unveil its A5 Sportback and revised A8, Mercedes is expected to unveil its new E-Class Cabrio, BMW the new X1 and 5-Series GT/Progressive Activity Sedan... even Opel is anticipated to unveil its new Astra in Frankfurt. But according to the latest reports, Volkswagen is preparing to upstage them all with four new models.

Nissan teams up with AeroVironment to charge electric cars in D.C.

"No electric vehicle charging company left behind." That seems to be the mantra over at Nissan with the announcement that it has partnered with AeroVironment and the District of Columbia to install infrastructure to accommodate the hundreds of electric vehicles it envisions will be put to use by both the government and the public over the next few years. No stranger to electric cars, AeroVironment played a large role in the creation of both GM's solar-powered Sunraycer and Impact pre-EV1 prototype, and it currently supplies charging infrastructure components for many industrial customers. For its part, Nissan already has agreements in place with the likes of Ecotality, Better Place, Coulomb Technologies and Electromotive for other locales both in the States and abroad.

Penske, Andretti Green contemplating jump to F1?

If you think the domination of Brawn GP has shaken things up in Formula One, that's nothing compared to what could be in store for the F1 grid in the next year or two. While the FIA toys with budget caps and all manner of new regulations, several prospective teams are lining up at the potential of entering the field at a reduced cost. Following earlier reports that Lola, Aston Martin and several current GP2 teams are toying with the idea of jumping into top-tier grand prix racing, Bernie Ecclestone hinted at a press conference during this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix that not one, but two American entries are in the works.

Visteon Corp., the Van Buren Township-based supplier spin off from Ford Motor Co., reported a $2 million profit during the first three months of the year, thanks largely to a one-time accounting gain it received after putting its British operations in bankruptcy protection.

Visteon reported a quarterly profit of $2 million, or 2 cents per share, compared with a loss of $105 million or 81 cents per share during the same quarter in 2008.

Aside from North America, the only other market where hybrid vehicles have really taken off is Japan. Even with the popularity of the Prius and other hybrids from Toyota, none has ever made it to the top of the Japanese sales charts. Until now that is, as the new Honda Insight has gotten off to a strong start in Japan. April 2009 saw 10,481 new Insights registered in Japan, which puts it just ahead of the Honda Fit with 9,443 sales. The Fit was the top selling car in Japan for both the 2008 calendar year and fiscal year. So far through three months, buyers have purchased 19,475 Insights.

More F1 teams joins boycott call for 2010 regulation changes

Yesterday, we brought you news that Toyota could quit Formula One if FIA president Max Mosley's proposal for a two-tiered budget system is put in place. But the Japanese team based in Germany – currently enjoying its best season so far – isn't the only one making noise. Ferrari has hinted it could jump ship and put its energy into Le Mans, instead. Mercedes-Benz has said it could cancel its F1 program, and BMW has reportedly done the same. Now, three more teams are joining the call for the proposed regulations to be annulled, or else.

Maserati GranTurismo convertible spied:

The Maserati GranTurismo could soon be going topless--as spy shooters have caught a convertible version of the hot Italian sports car in testing on the N?rburgring.

The car is likely to get a 2+2 layout and would face off against the Aston Martin DBS, Ferrari California and other exotics. The heavy cladding in the rear leads us to believe it could be a retractable roof--similar to the California--however, reports have also suggested this could be a soft top. Stay tuned.

UK looks to implement roadside drug testing

According to the UK Telegraph, Britain's government is no longer willing to let those who have illegal drugs in their system slip through any more checkpoints. It has let the Department of Transportation know that it is looking at creating a new law that would ensnare anyone with illegal drugs in their systems, as well as those whose driving is impaired by using legal, medicinal drugs such as sleeping pills.

Tata looking to raise £1 billion to keep Jaguar, Land Rover going

We don't know how many times through the millennia one gentleman has told another, "Be careful with her – she's beautiful, but she's expensive." We would like to know if Alan Mullaly offered that warning to Ratan Tata (above) before the latter bought Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR). As with the Blue Oval before it, Tata Motors is about to throw billions at the English luxury marques and it is looking for help doing it.

Could Britain once again be a leader in green car technology?

Once upon a time, the British automobile industry was a force to be reckoned with, though more recently it has shrunk to a mere shell of its former self. Most of the factories that remain in the country are now owned by foreign companies including traditional British marques like Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin in addition to Nissan and Honda. Now that the auto industry is being transformed by the move to electrification and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, some industry veterans want to use the opportunity revive a native industry.

BMW: U.S. Four-Cylinders Possible, Not Yet Certain

2009 BMW 1-Series 128i

BMW has for a decade kept its four-cylinder engines out of the U.S. market. Instead, the product line has been heavily stocked with the company's best asset: in-line sixes. For the most part, TheCarConnection.com is happy with that choice, as BMW's straight-six engines are among the smoothest, most refined engines of their size. And they're surprisingly fuel-efficient; on a long highway trip with a manual-gearbox '07 530i and some right-foot discipline, this tester averaged 32 mpg?way better than most other vehicles its size.

Chrysler-Fiat: We Predict The 2012 Lineup

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It's official--Chrysler has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Now the long task of sorting out the good from the bad at the storied automaker, with the added task of joining hand in hand with Italy's Fiat Group to build a new Chrysler with a new range of small cars.

You might have questions about shopping for a new Chrysler today, and those are easy to answer. Yes, you're safe to buy--the government says it's going to back your warranty. Yes, Chrysler will be here in its current form for a while; Chapter 11 doesn't mean it will be going away overnight, though your local dealer may be having trouble sleeping at night as the company figures out which showrooms must close. The time is right to bargain hard for a new Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep, with every expectation you'll get service and parts when needed.

To stave off bankruptcy, General Motors must rework its union contracts, drastically cut its capacity, workforce and dealer networks – and convince creditors to take 10 cents on the dollar on $27 billion in unsecured debt. In two months. That's a herculean task for any company, much less for a monolith the size of The General.

Perhaps those suspicions will be eased somewhat with the release onto the interwebs of a lengthy video to introduce prospective buyers to the environmentally-friendly four-seater.

This Is NOT How To Install A Hitch

Forum member "Offroad250" over at Truckblog spotted this fine example of redneck engineering. Instead of mounting his hitch in a truck bed, this rocket-scientist installed it to the tailgate of his old S-10 Blazer.

Unfortunately we don't have larger images so that we may dissect the carefully thought-out details, but from what we have it's clearly evident the engineer behind this project went through at least one, no, two cases of beer before and during the installation. You can see the install isn't just on the tailgate, because that would be silly. Instead, the mounting brackets span the tailgate and mount onto the rear load floor. We can also see the installer took the time to beef up the system with what appears to be chain from a child's swing to back up the tailgate cable. Yessir, that there is a fine example of backyard ingenuity.

Dodge Circuit EV concept - Click above for a high-res gallery

A few weeks ago, we got a chance to step into the Dodge Circuit for a quick spin through downtown Detroit. We shot some video of that drive and now you can see the car in action (from the inside, mostly) and hear John Myers, who works for Chrysler's ENVI and was project lead on the Dodge Circuit EV, talk about the car. The bumpy roads weren't quite long and straight enough for our liking, but at least we got to learn a little bit more about Chrysler's EV strategy and why the automaker thinks it's ENVI battery strategy is better than Tesla's. Having driven both the Circuit and the Tesla Roadster, however shortly, I'd just like to say that if we can just get auto companies to keep on competing and making fast and fun all-electric sports cars, I'm all for it. Opel reportedly mulling reviving Wartburg as low-cost brand

Despite an uncertain future, Ward's Auto is reporting that Opel is looking at the possibility of starting a new low-cost line under the revived moniker "Wartburg." Made by East German company VEB AEW until 1991, in their most recent guise, Wartburgs were cheap transportation for the Communist set, vying for breadline parking spaces with Trabants and the like. The cheap and cheerless models were assembled in a facility in Eisenach that was within sight of Wartburg castle. When the Soviet-era factory closed, Opel opened up its own factory in Eisenach the following year.

Typically, F1-inspired merchandise is anything but simple. Whether crafted out of spare parts from the paddock or trimmed in carbon fiber, weight-wise, less may be more, but design-wise that's seldom the case.

Which is why the award-winning Formula.Chair is a refreshing change. The ultra-thin, lightweight stacking chairs were designed by Matthias Demacker to mimic the shape of the molded seats found in Formula One cars. Fabricated by Area DeClic, the award-winning chairs can be had in an array of colors, with or without upholstery, and in a variety of formats.
