Second Unlock for Sniper Protects Against Spies

Second Unlock for Sniper Protects Against Spies

Team Fortress 2's Sniper has always had a vulnerability to spies. It's hard to watch your back when you're peering through a scope, after all, and Valve's next update plans to address that. The "Razorback" is an indigenous shield hooked up to a car battery. A Spy who tries to backstab a Sniper with the Razorback equipped will get stunned, and can't stab again until the knife cools down. Unfortunately for the Sniper, the added weight slows him down, and it breaks apart after one use. This joins the bow and new maps and modes that we already knew were coming with the upcoming Sniper update. This leaves one more weapon unlock for the Sniper, along with whatever other goodies Valve has in store. It's about time we see a new "Meet the Team" video.

Note these are only retail games. So the list doesn't include titles downloaded over services like Steam and Direct2Drive. But hey, while it's not perfect reading, it's still interesting reading.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Multiplayer Preview: Wrecking Crew Jazzes Things Up

With 21 maps, two kinds of multiplayer and up to 16 players per online match, Red Faction: Guerrilla offers a lot of opportunities to blow stuff up.

Sadly, though, none of those modes include vehicles like the giant robot mech that you can use to stomp on buildings. This means no mech-to-mech combat; but fear not my communist-themed comrades. You can still wreck a ton of stuff in a short amount of time with only a sledgehammer and your proletariat will to bring down the glass and concrete towers of the capitalist pig Earth Defense Force.

Why Hello There Serious Sam 3

When did we last hear about Serious Sam 3? 2007? Oh dear. Far too long. Long enough, even, to worry the game has been quietly given the arse.

But no! Developers Croteam have posted a quick update on their company website, letting the world know that they have "recently started the development on two games". One of them is, well, not the "tactical military sim" mentioned a few years back, as that's been canned. So who knows what it is.

F.E.A.R. 2 Getting New Maps, New Heads

Now that Monolith's free downloadable content for F.E.A.R. 2 has come and gone, it's time to pay for a couple of new maps and some extra heads.

The second of three planned sets of downloadable content for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, the Armored Front pack's main feature is a set of four unique heads used to customize your multiplayer character, which should have the added effect of making it easier to shoot you in the face. Aside from the heads, Monolith is also providing a pair of new maps. Decoy is a training ground for Replica soldiers turned battleground, complete with pop up target dummies to add a little more confusion to the works. The second, called Conductor, takes place in a train yard, which I believe is a first in shooter history, not counting every other shooter ever created.

Making A Game Out Of Today's War

The video game industry was about to get its first major game based on a current military action, only to have publisher Konami pull the plug. What's wrong with releasing a realistic war video game?

Six Days In Fallujah, which was announced and then abandoned by its publisher last month, was a game both hyped by its developer for its potential to be a game-documentary and scrutinized by game critics who questioned some of its Gears of War influences. To the public it became a flashpoint, a warning of video games perhaps going too far.

PlayStation 3 | Harry Potter crowned Half-Blood Prince June 30

Harry Potter has been causing problems for more than just Voldemort of late. In September, EA announced that it would be forced to delay its game tie-in to Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, following the film's abrupt retreat to summer 2009. A day after the announcement, EA said the delay would result in $120 million in revenue vanishing from its fiscal year--which only aggravated the publisher's full-year losses of $1 billion.

Free 'Chamber' Apartment for PlayStation Home Users

Is your PlayStation Home apartment starting to bore you even more than your actual apartment? Sony's got your back. Beginning today, May 14, Home users will have the opportunity to download the brand new, totally free "Chamber" personal space -- a somewhat elvish looking joint with a tree sprouting right up the center. This limited edition pad will only be available for download until May 21, after which it will apparently vanish from the service entirely. Considering all the work that someone must have put into designing this space, it'd be more than a little surprising if Sony didn't at least try bringing this thing back eventually -- maybe even for a price. We'll just have to take their word on this one for now, though.

Cover E3 with Kotaku

It's the big show. Gaming nirvana. E3 has in the past been the place for gaming news and this year is shaping up to be a doozie.

In the midst of planning our coverage I thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice to have someone come along who could offer a unique perspective? Maybe a reader who isn't as jaded as the folks who have been going to the show for years?'

Activision Introduces Science Papa, No Relation

What company would have the gall to release a series of science experiment mini-games for the Nintendo DS and Wii and call it Science Papa? Oh yeah, that company.

I'd use this space to explain that Science Papa casts the player in the role of newest member of Science Papa's research team, aiming at becoming the best scientist in the world by competing in more than 30 different mini-game-driven experiments, but I am far too stunned by Activision's choice of names to do so.

Sony Posts Billion-Dollar Loss

Sony Corporation posted a billion-dollar loss for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009. Eurogamer reports that the largest loss came from the Computer Entertainment division, which cited dwindling PlayStation 2 sales and weak currency. By this point in its life cycle, Sony probably knew PS2 sales would be dropping and expected the PlayStation 3 to pick up the slack, but it hasn't been as widely adopted as many expected. It's not uncommon for large corporations to be losing money in this economy, but Sony is optimistic about the future. The company sold 10.1 million PlayStation 3 units, and 14.1 million PlayStation Portables in the 12-month period.
