| GM's HCCI engines now run from idle to 60 mph! May 25, 2009 at 7:19 pm |
| Since our first encounter with GM's HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) engines in August 2007, the powertrain research engineers at the GM Tech Center in Warren, MI have continued plugging away at the technology in an attempt to turn it into a marketable reality. The basic premise of compression ignition is simple. Based on the Ideal gas law (PV=nRT) if you decrease the volume of a particular quantity of air, the temperature rises to the point where fuel will spontaneously combust. The number one response with 40% of the vote was, "I never cared in the first place." Well, at least one of us here at Autoblog cared enough to watch the race on TV yesterday, but that couldn't stop long stretches of napping from eating up up dozens of laps at a time. A few interesting things happened while I was awake, including perennial Indy bridesmaid Tony Kannan crashing at the Brickyard for the third time in eight appearances. Helio Castroneves has won the 2009 Indianapolis 500, marking his third career win here at the Brickyard. It also makes for a record breaking 15th team with for Penske Racing. | Movement afoot to resurrect British Motor Show sooner rather than later? May 25, 2009 at 11:10 am |
| A gent in Britain with a load of can-do spirit and a personal fortune has decided that the British Motor Show must go on next year. Scuttled this year after a long decline, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has an eye toward resurrecting the show in 2013, even though some believe it might never return at all. According to Reuters, Chevrolet's Aveo replacement has been postponed until January 2011 due to the well-publicized financial troubles at General Motors and its Korean subsidiary, Daewoo. Used-car sales took a leap upward in April, and the trend is expected to continue at least until midyear as pent-up demand for affordable pre-owned vehicles jacks up at least one segment of the car marketplace. Please, to the powers above, and in Washington and on Wall Street: Do not condemn General Motors to fail. I have driven the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, and one thing I know: This is not an automaker that deserves to die. The long-awaited 2010 VW Scirocco R debuted today, sans the Italian flag, with a more powerful 265 HP 2.0 TSI, new body kit, upgraded suspension and the spirit of Germany.
