| Kojima countdown site reveals 'MASK' May 28, 2009 at 10:55 pm |
| The weather's getting weirder on the Kojima Productions "NEXT" teaser site. Not only have glimpses of more letters and what appears to be Raiden begun to materialize as the 90 hour mark approaches, but clicking on the studio's eerily morphing logo now takes visitors to an age-gated site for "MASK." Fittingly, a mask appears, slowly revealing a ghastly female face... Wait, isn't E3 next week? And isn't this game kind of a big deal for Sony? Ah, whatever. It's not the first game to blow cover this week, and it probably won't be the last. And it continues. On and on and on. Kojima Productions updated its countdown page today, revealing this image. Is it Raiden? Is it Gray Fox? Is it Sunny? Who knows? Kojima does, that's who. So, Prototype, we're a little worried about you, not gonna lie. Considering the recent wave of positive inFamous reviews, talk of Crackdown 2, and APB's E3 reveal, a game we once looked forward to greatly could quite possibly fall by the wayside. MTV Games and Harmonix's Rock Band is getting a little heavier the week after E3, as the game's community 'zine has revealed that a dozen new Iron Maiden tracks will be released as downloadable content.

| Analyst: This console cycle may never end May 28, 2009 at 10:46 pm |
| click for alternate headline image It's not too uncommon to say that the current crop of consoles won't be replaced for quite some time. Some believe that the current generation will last until around 2012, at which time it will be replaced by the next round of hardware (or the Apocalypse, if you swing that way). Others say that this generation of consoles will be the last, as publishers will soon jump to a unified platform rather than create disparate versions of games for a handful of platforms. | Industry pipes up on lack of overtime pay from crunch time May 28, 2009 at 10:17 pm |
| Just over a month ago, Joystiq talked to Epic Games' Mike Capps about crunch times in game development cycles and how many hours his employees are expected to work throughout the development of a game. Interestingly, Develop put the question of crunch time (among other things) to "over 350 industry professionals" via a poll and found that nearly 98 percent of respondents received no overtime pay for crunch work. Some people say that the demand from video games has leveled off says Square Enix honcho Yoichi Wada. What to do, what to do. The reason for this, he continues, is that the customer base has been increasing. Travis Touchdown is, in the end, Travis Touchdown -- no more, no less. The last time we saw him (in No More Heroes), he had advanced to ranking number one in the United Assassins Association... Epic Games, the folks behind Gears of War, know a lot about how games are made now. So there's a good chance Epic has a good handle on the future. The company's Unreal Engine 3 powers a good chunk of this generation's titles.

Him and his minions. There are also new letters: C, O, P. There's the number six, too. The site also sports a new Kojima Productions logo in the bottom corner. When it changes to a mask, click on the image, and it takes you to another site. That site has this: Any doubt that the mysterious "Kojima Productions Next" project was not part of the Metal Gear Solid canon were erased today, when a character from the long-running series appeared on the game's--or games'-- teaser Web site. The latest cycle in the mindf*** that is the Kojima Productions "NEXT" countdown page went live this evening, and beyond flashing two new letters ("P" and "R"), those who wait long enough can get startled with the face of a younger-looking Snake. The last Kojima Productions countdown clock wasn't exactly climatic. This one will hopefully make up for it. The lighting and rain return, but the letters "R" and "P" flash on the screen. | Japanese Hardware War Now Officially Boring May 28, 2009 at 9:20 pm |
| Minor fluctuations in the currently tepid Japanese console race don't make this week's Media Create chart all that exciting, to be honest. A slightly slinking PlayStation presence and marginally expanded Nintendo one isn't exactly thrilling. But neither was the software contest, which saw a pair of Nintendo DS titles beating out the Japanese release of Mass Effect. The Xbox 360 game gave Microsoft's console a slight bump in sales, but not enough to push it past PlayStation 2 sales. While PlayTV has been giving British PlayStation owners enhanced televisual experiences for some time, and the BBC has been working to improve the performance of the iPlayer on the Wii... Sega got a taste of crossover success with 2007's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, and the publisher has been making the original gaming speed freak play nice with other brands ever since. While BioWare's Mass Effect didn't score top placement in this week's Japanese software sales chart—Sloane to MacHale: Nazo no Monogatari did—it had a pretty damn good showing, considering the platform's last place position.

| Here's (Some Of) What Namco Bandai's Bringing To E3 May 28, 2009 at 8:40 pm |
| Publisher Namco Bandai doesn't seem quite ready to reveal its entire E3 lineup for 2009, but it has let us know which of its games are definitely going to be there. Any surprises? No, silly. Why would there be surprises in a partially-revealed lineup of games that Namco Bandai is showing off at E3? It's obviously trying to get the biggest announcement bang for its many bucks spent on booth space, so expect any "megaton" announcements to happen next week, not this week. For those who don't know what those are, know that sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov established three basic laws governing the programming of robots for his works, which later became almost canonical amongst other sci-fi writers, and which remain popular to this day. Next week, all eyes will be on E3, as the video game industry blows the doors off the Los Angeles Convention Center with megaton-caliber announcements. There will be short shorts, there will be news. After Lair tanked, things haven't been going all too well for Factor 5. In fact, things got so bad that the company's North American arm was severed not too long ago.... We're still not sure why anyone would want to retrofit video games with last-gen tech and turn them into books, but sci-fi/fantasy publisher Tor has apparently had a lot of success with the practice lately, with franchises like Halo and Dragon Age. Today Sega delivers a wealth of screens, details, and even a teaser video for the upcoming update to Rebellion's original Aliens VS Predator. Like the PC original, the new Aliens VS Predator title will feature three separate campaign modes...

The Aino will let users control their PlayStation 3s using "Remote Play," allowing for across-the-internet streaming of media from your home console to your cell phone. Not bad. While it may not let you play Lair on the bus, it will apparently let you stream movies, music and whatever other media content you may have stored on your PS3 wherever you are in the world. | DS more popular than Paul Hogan in Australia May 28, 2009 at 3:37 pm |
| Okay, so DS hasn't really bested Paul Hogan's popularity -- as the man is an Australian legend -- but it is the fastest-selling piece of gaming hardware ever down under. Edge reports the DS, DS Lite and DSi have pulled together to sell two million units in a span of 221 weeks, the fastest any platform has managed to reach that coveted two-million milestone. Nintendo of Australia boasts that the DS has been the number one console in Australia for three years. That's just ... wow. The signs are so clear that Apple wants a bigger slice of the gaming pie, you probably don't need us offering our own cockamamie theories (iPhun!). But maybe Yves Guillemot will be enough to convince you. Well, that about wraps it up for video games. No, no, we're serious. There's a new world order and we'd highly suggest that you get in line. How are we so sure? Because SOE's free MMO Free Realms just crossed the two-million-player mark. Blocks rain from the sky, blotting out the sun with their odd shapes and vivid colors. Your only hope to survive this onslaught is to match colors, banishing these blocks with strings of carefully constructed combos. This week's Japanese hardware contest wasn't a proud one, with total hardware unit sales just barely cracking the 100,000 mark. Not good. But it was a winning week for the Nintendo DSi and Wii.
