We generally think of BMW as the maker of some of the world's best sports sedans, but its put out some impressive roadsters over the years. Seventy-five years to be exact. The Bavarian auto manufacturer has been producing two-door open-seaters for three quarters of a century now, starting with 315/1 Sports model that was unveiled at the 1934 Berlin Motor Show followed by the more powerful 319/1.

PopSci grapples with age-old question of what is worse: driving drunk or stoned

Impaired driving kills thousands of motorists each year, and ad campaigns and increased police enforcement have done little to stop it from happening. When we say "impaired driving," most think about alcohol. But marijuana usage prior to getting behind the wheel can be just as dangerous.

Professors from Israel's Ben Gurion University wanted to see which was worse; drink driving or stoned driving. The university chose 14 students to participate in the study,

As bankruptcy nears, new GM begins to emerge

DETROIT - With an almost certain bankruptcy filing days away, General Motors is beginning its reinvention, planning to retool one factory to make its smallest vehicles ever in the U.S. and rid itself of the biggest.

As GM's board began two days of meetings Friday to make a final decision on the company's fate, GM was also closing in on a sale of its European Opel unit, and its main union overwhelmingly approved dramatic labor cost cuts. A deal to sell its rugged but inefficient Hummer brand also appeared on the horizon.

Patents reveal Ferrari's plan for new turbocharged engines

Last week, we learned that Ferrari was taking a long, hard look at hybrid drivetrains as a way to improve the performance of its line of supercars when a less-than-ideal amount of traction is present. While Ferrari's patent documents didn't mention environmental concerns as a reason to investigate hybrids, it seems likely that the issue is at least on the minds of Italian automaker's engineers.

Telesto Ventures' bid for GM's Saturn division thick with Chrysler talent

The General Motors appendage known as Saturn is scheduled to be scalpeled off sooner rather than later. GM has reportedly whittled the roster of buyers it might let Saturn go to down to two or three, says a source at The Detroit News. After 93 Years, G.M. Shares Go Out on a Low Note
May 29, 2009 at 5:22 pm

From our colleagues at DealBook:

Anyone who grew up thinking of General Motors stock as a blue-chip investment probably wept a little on Friday. Or maybe buckets of tears.

G.M.'s shares closed at 75 cents a share, down 37 cents, or 33 percent from Thursday, on what was likely to be its final day of trading before the company seeks bankruptcy protection next week. The decline set a new 52-week low and historic low for G.M., whose previous low was $1, set earlier this month. The company's stock fell another 4 cents, to 71 cents a share, in after-hours trading.

Listening to pizza magnate "Papa" John Schnatter point out the differences between the 1972 Z28 Camaro he lost, and the one we're driving around Houston in, you come to realize his quest for the lost car is more than a gimmick.

When Papa John opened his first restaurant he had to sell his 1972 gold-and-black Z28 Camaro to get the $1,600 he needed to pay for the equipment. He remembers parting with the car and, in describing it, he visually winces as he explains that "it was so painful I had to look away so I couldn't see it driving off."

REPORT: Koenigsegg a finalist in bid to buy Saab

In a brief article on its website, the UK's Channel4 says that a Swedish newspaper, Dagens Industri, is reporting that supercar maker Koenigsegg is in the running to purchase either a stake in Saab, or the whole kit and caboodle.

According to the report, Koenigsegg is reportedly a front-runner to rescue the fellow Swedish automaker, with the other suitors being the Renco Group, a U.S. investment company, and the Italian automaker Fiat – the latter of which is being denied by both Fiat and Saab.

Heard about China's new 42 mpg standards? Get educated first

Which is better? A national fleet fuel economy standard (think CAFE) of 42.2 mpg or 35.5. mpg? The former, right? Well, 42.2 is exactly what China has put in place and, from that one number, they seem to be beating the U.S. The trusty John O'Dell over at Green Car Advisor breaks down why we need to look beyond the numbers so that when the political debate on "why are the Chinese so far ahead of the U.S.?" gets going, we can answer the question with a bit of background.

General Motors has issued a cryptic press release suggesting it plans to retool an existing plant here in the United States to build a new small car. No specifics are given on what small car this may be, as the missive only says that the plant will have the capacity to build up to 160,000 small and compact cars and that "this vehicle adds to GM's growing portfolio of U.S.-built, highly fuel efficient cars including the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt." Know what that means? It's speculation time!

General Motors says it plans to build small car in U.S.:

General Motors said Friday that it plans to build a small, fuel-efficient car in the United States that will compete in the ?B-segment? as the company tries to comply with stiffer mileage mandates recently proposed by the Obama administration.

GM said it likely would retool one of the sites to be idled under its restructuring plan for production of the car. The investment would be $600 million to $700 million, and the plant would employ 1,200 workers, including hourly and salaried employees. The site has not been selected yet, GM said.

Classic Ad: Free Wheelin' Ford
May 29, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Ford recently announced plans to convert its once profitable truck plant into a manufacturing plant for small cars. The reason, as my colleague Jerry Garrett explained, is that the market has shifted away from big, gas-swilling S.U.V.'s to smaller, fuel-efficient cars like the Focus.

But flash back 30 years and, if Ford's advertisers are to be believed, the market was all about good times and fast trucks. Just check out the above "Free Wheelin'" Ford commercial featuring a carefree driver hightailing his truck down a sandy beach and boardwalk. If shot today,

Aston Martin to join F1 circus in 2012?

It looks like GT and Le Mans prototype racing may be just the beginning for Aston Martin. Following an agreement this week with F1 promotions boss, Bernie Ecclestone, Aston Martin could be jumping into the Formula One ranks in 2012. Like Aston's other race programs, it's F1 campaign will be operated by Prodrive, although the team will actually launch in 2010 as the Prodrive team then switch to the automaker's branding two years later.

Dodge Challenger Wheel Weights Round Out The Field

Dodge Challenger Wheel Weights Round Out The Field

It's an epidemic folks: new muscle cars seem to be afflicted with difficult-to-balance wheels. First, it was the Camaro, then the Mustang, and now we can add the Challenger to the list.

We realize this story line is getting a bit ridiculous, they are just wheel weights after all, but in the interest of fairness we figured we should point out that horsepower isn't the only place in the muscle car wars these three cars compete. Nope, it's the hefty load of wheel balancing weights as well.

Tesla Motors and Lotus announce matching recall notices

Tesla Roadster - Click above for high-res image gallery

Tesla Motors has announced its first-ever recall, affecting all 345 Roadsters the Silicon Valley automaker produced in 2008. According to the official recall notice from the NHTSA, the rear hub flange bolts on some vehicles may not be torqued to proper specifications, which could lead to "degredation in vehicle handling and a rubbing noise from the rear of the vehicle." That, as you would imagine, would be bad, and if left unresolved could result in a crash.

Rendered speculation: Peugeot 008, French iMiEV

We've known for several months now that Peugeot would be selling a re-badged version of the Mitsubishi iMiEV in Europe in a couple of years. What we haven't seen is the car itself. We still haven't, but AutoExpress has taken a crack at rendering what it might look like. Overall, their imagined car doesn't look much different from the existing Mitsubishi aside from the front of the car.

Frank Weber Says Chevy Volt is Necessary and Relevant For Energy Independence

Frank had the feeling many of the world's brightest minds think electric cars development should be in the pervue of the start-up not a large industrial company like GM.

He has set out to prove them wrong.

Weber says electric cars aren't about a "green niche" but a necessary tool to end oil dependence.

Motorcycles Too Pricey? Rent One Instead

Owning a car in the city can be such a drag - what with the high price of parking, the confusing signs and the crush of commuter traffic. But owning a motorcycle is no picnic, either. GM trying to unload Saturn, Hummer

Whether or not General Motors files for bankruptcy protection, the carmaker has made clear that its future plans do not include two brands — Saturn and Hummer — that once seemed to hold immense promise for the company.

GM has said it will decide this year whether to sell or discontinue both brands as part of the stringent cost-cutting measures aimed at trying to restore the ailing company's financial stability. The overall effort also has created an uncertain future for two other GM divisions, Saab and Opel.
