|   The latest cycle in the mindf*** that is the Kojima Productions "NEXT" countdown page went live this evening, and beyond flashing two new letters ("P" and "R"), those who wait long enough can get startled with the face of a younger-looking Snake. Or rather, Big Boss, due to the eyepatch. As for the letters, they join the two "E"s and the number "3" on the countdown.  The last Kojima Productions countdown clock wasn't exactly climatic. Konami's cryptic online teaser for Hideo Kojima's next project has fittingly done to countdowns what the Metal Gear Solid series did to videogame storytelling -- made them absurdly convoluted and impenetrable (oh, we kid, we kid).

November 3 is the date for BioShock 2 in North America, but Europeans will get a head start. During the company's conference call to discuss second quarter financial results...  Sony may have just one more PlayStation announcement pre-announced before its E3 showing, as retail sources are indicating that another "new" PlayStation 3 bundle is en route to Best Buy. There's no singing or plastic drum controller to smack in Rock Band Unplugged, as players use the PSP's default controls to beat match notes scrolling down the familiar note highway...  Another 19 downloadable tracks join the previously announced DLC from Ministry, The Cranberries, and The Zombies in this week's assemblage of Rock Band downloads for the Wii.  Rock Band addicts have a three-pack from industrial rock pioneers Ministry to look forward to next week, in addition to DLC from The Cranberries and The Zombies. |   Sega is bringing its A game to E3 2009. Two A games, in fact, along with a B game, a C game, two Olympic titles, and a movie tie-in. Sega's official E3 line-up announcement doesn't hint at any big surprises, but it does mention a fair number of titles we're definitely keeping an eye on. It's all about alphabetical convenience this year, with Aliens Vs. Predator, Alpha Protocol, Bayonetta, and The Conduit making up the core titles in Sega's line-up this year. Three completely original IP to one licensed title is a very welcome ratio indeed. |   We're a year and a half removed from Call of Duty 4, and on the verge of a true sequel to boot. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted as much in an investor call (via Eurogamer)...  For a long time, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has maintained a stance that the Nintendo DS and Apple's iPhone aren't competing. A stance he seems to have let slide for a day.

|   Blizzard revealed on the official World of Warcraft community site that they're finally addressing one of the more cosmetic complaints held by many players of the Druid class: Every character in the game has the freedom to customize their appearance, but Druids are stuck looking identical to every other Druid when they shift to bear or cat form. Furthermore, a shapeshifted level 80 Druid looks exactly the same as they did four years ago at level 10. As of the next major content update, that should no longer be the case.  Spore Creatures did extremely well for Electronic Arts last year, so it's no surprise that the company would want to continue the trend by bringing Spore once again to Nintendo's handheld. However, if Epic is right, that won't be the case for much longer, though it will also open a host of new challenges."We're only about a factor of a thousand off from achieving all that in real-time without sacrifices. |   Sony may have just one more PlayStation announcement pre-announced before its E3 showing, as retail sources are indicating that another "new" PlayStation 3 bundle is en route to Best Buy. That's "new" in double quotes. Because this doesn't sound like a new new hardware bundle for the PS3. Sorry, this retail listing is not "slim" model confirmation quite yet. But Joystiq's reporting that Sony will be offering up a previously unavailable PlayStation 3 bundle at Best Buy with two games, something that sounds awfully similar to the Target bundle released earlier this year.  Majesco is bending the very fabric of space to bring us Flip's Twisted World, an upside-down platformer for the Nintendo Wii, which they'll be showing off next week at E3 2009.  Kotaku's newfound obsession with robots hs drawn mechanical video game characters from throughout time and space to do battle in the Robot Wars - and only you can decide...  Remember that bizarre story about former president Bill Clinton being approached for the role of the president in Fallout 3? Well as it turns out, that was more about an overzealous casting agent than anything Bethesda actually wanted.  If you had any doubts about just how well the DSi was going to sell in its first month, the NPD sales numbers for April go a long way in proving that the DS can weather any storm.

|   They say you learn something new every day. For today? You learn that when he was only 14, id's John Carmack broke into a school to steal some Apple II computers. Apple IIs! He was arrested, and sentenced to a year's detention in a juvenile home. Now, we don't point this out to somehow shame the man. He's an industry great, it's a matter of public record, and it was decades ago.  So, we've had S.T.A.L.K.E.R., we've had S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, and now we've got S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat. Won't running around the same palce for a third time seem a little, well, boring? Course it would.  After a week's worth of largely entertaining Team Fortress 2 "Spy Vs. Sniper" updates, Valve has officially released new content for two of the game's classes. But things aren't exactly going as planned.  EA's Boom Blox Bash Party is out and people are already making levels for download featuring famous stuff to wreck. Crystalline II - A level made by EA's Boom Blox team. |   A Blu-ray disc version of mecha anime Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone includes a fold-in which what appears to be a new game announcement: an Evangelion title for the PS3. The announcement reads, "The shape of a new report. Misato Katsuragi info plan. News will change with the PS3..." There's a Namco Bandai Games logo on the same page — Namco Bandai is releasing an action adventure Evangelion game for the PSP this summer. One would assume that if there was an Evaneglion game, Namco Bandai would be handling that as well.  And the carrot-roping continues! The new issue of Famitsu's PlayStation imprint hints at the upcoming game announcement from Kojima Productions. The text reads, "The latest work from Metal Gear franchise maker Kojima Productions approaches.  Conduit developers High Voltage mustn't have got the memo. E3 is next week, not this week. |   Square Enix are notorious for bleeding their intellectual properties dry. You like Final Fantasy? Here's 119 Final fantasy games, etc etc. And now that Square owns Eidos, things are only going to get worse. Addressing shareholders following Square's purchase of Eidos, Square Enix boss Yoichi "Imperial Hot" Wada told of the company's success in creating a "number of deliverables from one worldview" for their franchises. Which is corporate speak for "we make a fuckton of money from Final Fantasy spin-offs, anime and toys".  The build-up has been immense. These games have been years in the making. |   In two days, the sequel to "soul breeding" game Record of Agarest War ZERO is released in Japan. Let the merchandising begin! Priced at ¥12,600 (US$133), this is a lycra Record of Agarest War ZERO "hug pillow" cover. Huge pillow covers are nothing new for anime or manga characters, but are largely lacking for PS3 games.  Shanghai is looking rather worse for the wear in Army of Two: The 40th Day. Panicked civilians scurry through the streets as buildings come toppling down seemingly at random. |   This past April 1 was, like the year before it and the year before that, April Fool's Day. Osaka-based game company joined in the fun and launched a website for faux retro shooter Star Radish. The game really exists. Well, as an in-game game, that is. The game will be making an appearance in upcoming DS witch touching game Doki Majo Plus. It lives!  Despite the inherent goodness of their previous games, Q-Games' upcoming PixelJunk 1-4 was never going to sell with a name that sounded like a Mario Stage. So it's been changed to something more marketable.  A damned newsy week deserves a huge roundup: Capcom chickened out over pigs, and Fallout 3's DLC is at last coming to PS3. If nothing else, it neuters some clichéd flamebait from Fallout 3 comments.  It's safe to assume that James Bond isn't a big massively multiplayer online game player. Sure, he has probably dabbled with World of Warcraft on one of those long flights from England to Russia, but we doubt orcs and paladins are really his thing.  Battlefield Bad Company 2 doesn't reinvent anything, but it doesn't really need to either.Earlier this month I had a chance to sit in on an 12-on-12 multiplayer match of the game in the spacious and snowpacked Snowbound level.

|   Christian Pearce works at special effects workshop WETA (Lord of the Rings, King Kong). Christian Pearce also enjoys drawing cars, which he does on his Nintendo DS. Using nothing but the sketch program Colors, Pearce completed the pics shown in the vid to your left, which then formed part of an exhibition in his native New Zealand (held this past February).  Nintendo does not rest, Nintendo does not stop. Even with the success of the Wii and the DS, Nintendo keeps going. "We do not think that Nintendo DS and Wii will last forever," Iwata told investors in a recent financial briefing.  For a long time, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has maintained a stance that the Nintendo DS and Apple's iPhone aren't competing. A stance he seems to have let slide for a day.  It appears that LucasArts has more droid-slaying, lightsaber-swinging action planned in the Star Wars Battlefront fashion, as the ESRB has rated Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron for the PSP and Nintendo DS.

|   Blur, the upcoming combat racer from Bizarre Creations, features licensed automobiles. How'd the Project Gotham Racing developer snag them? According to Bizarre, it's choice of vehicles helped — meaning, there aren't Ferraris or Lamborghinis. "If someone doesn't want to do what we want to do then we just won't put it in the game," says Bizarre Creations' Gareth Wilson. "There have been a couple of big manufacturers, can't tell you who, that have gone you can't set the cars on fire, and we've gone, OK we won't use your cars then."  Bizarre Creations' Blur is "completely focused on making racing 'fun' again," according to its creators. You know the details, but do you know what Blur looks like? Well, it looks like this.  Activision's post-earnings conference calls are always worth a listen. Aside from getting updates on just how the publisher continues to rake in gobs of cash--$981 million...  The team behind Project Gotham Racing hopes "make racing fun again" with Blur, a racer that features photo-realistic car and the ability to blast competitors out of the way with bursts of energy, Bizarre Creations said today.
