Publish Spreadsheets in Google Docs Directly as PDF or Excel Files
May 23, 2009 at 10:10 am

Google Docs has long allowed users to publish their spreadsheets on the web as HTML web pages but now you can also publish spreadsheet data as downloadable PDF or Excel files.

That means anyone one can download your public spreadsheets from Google Docs servers directly in PDF or Excel format without having to open the corresponding document in Google Docs or another Office application.

You may either publish your entire spreadsheet on the web or just a portion of data (e.g. cells B2 to C9 will be represented as B2:C9). To see this in action, download this PDF (that contains the full sheet) and then check this HTML page that has only a portion of data.

You may ask how is this any different from manually uploading a PDF version of the Excel spreadsheet on a website?

Well, the advantage here is that the PDF conversion happens in real-time so people who download your spreadsheets from Google servers in PDF format will always get the latest copy of data provided you have checked "Automatically republish when changes are made" at the time of publishing your sheet(s).

The .xls publishing option is available for publishing all sheets only, not specific sheets or cell ranges. Similarly, you can’t publish cell ranges on PDF files.

Capture Screenshots in Office 2010 with the new Screen Clipping Tool
May 23, 2009 at 6:49 am

screen clippingMicrosoft OneNote has a built-in screen clipping utility that lets you capture any part of the desktop screen with one click. And it’s smart because if you screen capture a web page with OneNote, the URL of the page is automatically added to the screenshot image so you can always make out the source from the clipping.

This immensely useful screen clipping feature of OneNote is now part of Office Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010 as well so you may no longer need a separate screenshot program for basic screen captures in documents and presentations.

Manan, who first noticed the screen clipping feature of Office 2010, says that the screenshot option is available under the "Insert" menu and lets you capture screenshots of open windows or any portion of the desktop screen via a marquee selection.

The screenshot dropdown (under Image) lets you create a new screen clipping as well as browse all your previous screenshot images that you may capture inside Office 2010.

Certain test builds of Office 2010 are floating around on various torrent sites but if you want to test-drive a (legal) preview version of Office 2010, do put your name on the wait-list. The final release of Office 2010 is expected to happen sometime in the first half of 2010 - see the Office video trailer. Thanks Keith.

China Imposes Blanket Ban on all Blogger Blogs
May 23, 2009 at 4:40 am

There are some 275 million blogs hosted on Blogger.com and all them have possibly been blocked in China.

china blocks blogger

This "crackdown" could have some relation to June 4, 2009, the day when the world will mark the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident or it may even be a service disruption because Google is saying that they are "working to restore access to Blogger in China."

In either case, users have been unable to access Blogger inside China since May 17th.

Blogging on Blogger from China

If you are inside Mainland China and need to publish new entries on your blogger blog, you can use the "post by email" option of Blogger or something like Posterous - email your articles to blogger@posterous.com and they will auto-post the message to your blog. Online blog editors (like the one in Facebook) can also help you write entries in blogger from anywhere.

And here are some tricks to help you read blogger blogs inside China.

Expand the YouTube Video Player to its Maximum Size without Full Screen
May 23, 2009 at 2:21 am

The default full screen button in the YouTube video player expands the video such that it covers your entire desktop area and all existing windows on the screen stay hidden as long as you are watching the video is this "maximized" state.

full screen mode in YouTube

That’s one way of doing things but what if you want more control over the size of the YouTube video player, here’s a simple hack - just replace the word "watch" in the URL of any YouTube video with "watch_popup" and the video will expand to fit your browser window, not the desktop.

For instance, if the original YouTube video is located at ..

youtube.com/watch?v=2mrRvUNlq50

the same video can be accessed standalone outside the YouTube website at..

youtube.com/watch_popup?v=2mrRvUNlq50

Resizing the browser window will also resize the YouTube player and you can press F11 in Firefox to mimic YouTube’s full screen mode even with this hack.

YouTube & Sticky Windows

You may also use the trick for watching YouTube videos in sticky mode. Just open the YouTube video in a new window (not tab), resize it according to your need and use a program like Always on Top to watch videos while working on other tasks.

Embed YouTube Player

You can use the the watch_popup URL with the IFRAME tag to directly embed any YouTube video on your website without having to calculate the confusing height and width ratios necessary for the EMBED tag. In the case of IFRAME, specify the height or width as 100% and it will auto-expand to fit the entire available space on the site.

Others may use this hack to watch 18+ YouTube videos without logging.

Google Analytics "Visitor Counter" Badge for WordPress Blogs
May 23, 2009 at 12:38 am

analytics visitor counter analytics hit counter

You probably use the FeedBurner badge to show the count of your feed subscribers and Twitter badge to display the number of your followers on Twitter. Now there’s a new badge in town to display visitor data from Google Analytics onto your WordPress powered website.

Called Google Analyticar, this plug-in uses the Google Analytics API to prepare a stats widget that will show statistics (unique visitors and page views) about yesterday’s visitors on your site.

Sitemeter and Statcounter too offer similar ‘visitor counter’ badges but since all of us have Google Analytics by default, the Analytics badge may come more handy.

The same Google Analytics plugin also includes tracking of external links as well as clicks on downloadable files like PDF, MP3, etc. [via]
