| GM to cut 3,400 more white-collar U.S. jobs May 22, 2009 at 7:36 pm |
| General Motors Corp., facing a probable bankruptcy, is making plans to cut about 3,400 additional white-collar jobs in the United States, the Free Press has learned. GM has signaled that more salaried jobs would be lost in its stepped-up restructuring, but it did not give details. Earlier this year, GM cut 3,400 white-collar jobs from its U.S. operations as part of a global headcount reduction. People familiar with the planning, which has not been finalized, said the next round would be similar to the previous effort. That represents about 13% of GM's salaried U.S. workforce of about 26,000. A woeful sales environment and the financial struggles of General Motors and Chrysler will set the auto sales hierarchy on end in 2009. At least that's how IHS Global Insight sees things. According to The Washington Post, the White House is readying General Motors for a bankruptcy filing that could come as early as the end of next week. According to the paper... While it might not save General Motors Corp. from bankruptcy, GM and the UAW reached a tentative labor agreement Thursday that ultimately could give the union safer footing if the troubled automaker files for Chapter 11 reorganization.

| According to The Detroit Free Press, the U.S. Treasury has dumped another $7.5 billion into GMAC's coffers just two weeks after the bank was told by federal regulators that it needed billions in order to survive. In another government-backed boost, GMAC is now allowed to issue FDIC-insured debt. Both actions are reportedly designed to help restore faith in the damaged U.S. credit markets. While it might not save General Motors Corp. from bankruptcy, GM and the UAW reached a tentative labor agreement Thursday that ultimately could give the union safer footing if the troubled automaker files for Chapter 11 reorganization. The U.S. Treasury continued to mold Detroit's auto industry Wednesday, appointing C. A Republican senator late today offered an amendment that would block Chrysler or General Motors Corp. from receiving federal aid if they tried to close dealerships with less than 60 days notice.

| According to The Washington Post, the White House is readying General Motors for a bankruptcy filing that could come as early as the end of next week. According to the paper, the proceedings would likely grant GM nearly $30 billion in additional federal loans, bringing taxpayer investments into the company to almost $45 billion. A woeful sales environment and the financial struggles of General Motors and Chrysler will set the auto sales hierarchy on end in 2009. At least that's how IHS Global Insight sees things. While it might not save General Motors Corp. from bankruptcy, GM and the UAW reached a tentative labor agreement Thursday that ultimately could give the union safer footing if the troubled automaker files for Chapter 11 reorganization.
