Quickly wanted to share that Digital Inspiration was recently featured on the AdSense Chinese blog - the English translated versions are available here and here.

In related news, the arrangement of Google ads on this site was recently discussed in an online webinar on AdSense Optimization at 11m 20s (placement targeting) and again at 13m 18s (Ad Link units). Thanks.

Switch from Yahoo Mail to Gmail
May 14, 2009 at 12:22 pm

If you like to abandon your Yahoo Mail account in favor of Gmail, here’s some good news. You can now move copy all your old contacts and email messages from the Yahoo! inbox to your new Gmail address without having to worry about complex IMAP or POP3 configuration.

email migration guide

How to Move from Yahoo Mail to Gmail

Gmail now offers a new import mails option under Settings -> Accounts and Import. Enter the username and password of Yahoo Mail account and all the messages will be copied to your Gmail account in the next few hours. Once the migration is over, any incoming email on your old Yahoo address will be auto-forward to your Gmail account for another month.

The reason why I stressed Yahoo! Mail here is because it was the only web email service that required users to upgrade to Mail! Plus for them to move their data out to another email provider. That however changed with today’s announcement on the Gmail blog.

The Import function is currently available in new Gmail accounts only (not Google Apps) but it will soon be available for all so if you are in a hurry, just set up another Gmail account and use Mail Fetcher to copy Yahoo mails from this new address to your old Gmail account.

Download your Picasa Web Albums without Picasa Software
May 14, 2009 at 11:02 am

picasa If you are using Picasa Web Albums to store your photographs but don’t have the Picasa desktop software to download those images back to the hard drive, here’s a simple trick that will help you download original (full size) pictures from any of your Picasa Albums without requiring the Picasa application.

Step 1: Open Picasa Utility and sign-in with your Google Account* - use the same credentials that you use for logging into your Picasa account.

*Picasa Web Utility is a Google App Engine powered application so your Google password won’t be shared with the developer.

Step 2: Once you have authorized Picasa Web Utility to access your photos, it will show a list of all your existing Picasa Album. Select any album that you want to download locally.

Step 3: Under options, choose “Original Photo Size” and click Generate Codes. Picasa Web Utility will now create direct download links to all photos in that Picasa Web Album.

Open notepad, copy-paste those Picasa links here and save the text file with a .html extension. Now open this HTML file into any web browser and choose Save As -> entire page. This will download all the Picassa images to your hard drive.

Picasa Web Utility has other applications as well. For instance, you may generate HTML codes for thumbnails and create an instant photo gallery for publishing on a blog.

iGoogle on your Desktop with Adobe AIR
May 14, 2009 at 6:26 am

iGoogler is an Adobe AIR application that lets you access iGoogle, or your personalized Google home page, from the desktop.

iGoogle logo Nothing fancy here as the app will only create a shortcut icon to the iGoogle website on your desktop and when you double click this icon, the iGoogle website opens up in a standalone browser.

Such a feature is available by default in Chrome (see #7 - website shortcuts) while Firefox users can create shortcuts to any web page through Prism. For everyone else, iGoogler might be worth trying.

If you are already using iGoogle, click here to follow this blog inside iGoogle. If you are new here, check this animated video tour of iGoogle.

Sample Chapter from The Twitter Book by Tim O'Reilly
May 14, 2009 at 4:24 am

Read a sample chapter from the Twitter book (also available as PDF).

Tim O’Reilly, the founder of O’Reilly Media, has written an illustrated guide on Twitter - The Twitter Book - that promises to teach you everything you need to know to quickly become a Twitter power user.

Unlike the other O’Reilly titles, The Twitter Book is presented in a colored format with practical examples (using screenshots of real tweets), links to interesting mashups, best practices and essential Twitter manners.

Here’s another interesting excerpt from the Twitter book:

When via is better than RT

Write a note that tells the world what this link means to you. Then use via to tell the world who showed you the link in the first place. (Via is also great for giving credit when you got a link from a source who isn't on Twitter.)

In an ideal world, use literal retweets only when the original phrasing is unique and a key part of what you want to pass on. A straight retweet should show the character of the person making the original posting, not just a link. Unless, of course, it's news that's just so hot that you have to pass it on before it burns your keyboard.

Publish Your Blog on Amazon Kindle & Earn Revenue
May 14, 2009 at 1:10 am

You can now publish your blog (or any RSS feed) for sale on the Amazon Kindle store and Amazon will share revenue with you for every Kindle user who subscribes to your feed. The facility is available to all bloggers worldwide.

kindle blogs

How much can you earn from Kindle Publishing

Though you have no say in setting the price of your blog, most blogs on Kindle are currently available for a monthly subscription fee of $.99 to $1.99 and your share of revenue is fixed at 30%.

You can therefore expect around 30¢ per month per Kindle subscriber which may seem like a small amount but it at least widens the reach of your content.

How to Publish Your Blog on Kindle

Earlier you had to partner with Newstex for getting your blog on the Amazon store but now the process is much less complicated.

If your blog content is available in languages like English, Spanish, French, Italian or German, simply fill this form (create a new account, don’t use your existing Amazon.com account credentials), add the RSS feed of your blog and submit. You may add any number of blogs or news feeds to your account.

Once Amazon approves your blog, it will be available to Kindle users on the Amazon Store and also Amazon Associates.

You”ll also need a 800x 600 screenshot image of your Blog home page and 430×50 banner or logo of your blog. Make sure you use a proper image format (I recommend PNG 24 bit) as that will appear on the Amazon.com product page where customers will view your blog before subscribing.

Your Blog on Kindle - Screenshots

Kindle Blogs are auto-delivered wirelessly to the Kindle and updated throughout the day. They are fully downloaded onto your Kindle so you can read them even when you’re not wirelessly connected (offline reading). And unlike RSS readers which often only provide headlines, Blogs on Kindle contain full text content and most images so you should submit full text feeds.

In case you don’t have a Kindle device to test the layout of your blog on the e-ink screen, Amazon provides a preview feature (available at the time of adding your blog) so you can know how the feed will appear on the Kindle screen. Here are some screenshots:

Payments for Kindle Subscriptions

Amazon will pay you 30% of the monthly blog subscription price for every Kindle subscriber to your blog. The payment will be made via EFT if you are based in US or via check for bloggers outside US. There’s no fee associated with the check for international publishers or those who reside outside America.
