| Ask AutoblogGreen: Do electric vehicles need front air intakes? May 21, 2009 at 7:56 pm |
| A reader posed us an interesting question the other day about air intakes and grilles. Specifically: do electric vehicles need them at all and why do many internal combustion vehicles have such large examples. For conventional vehicles, an intake of some kind is necessary in order to dissipate the heat in the coolant that keeps the engine from melting. As much as many of us would love to park our fossil-fuel-burning internal combustion engines for good in favor of electric or hydrogen-powered cars, that's not likely to happen on a grand scale in the next several years. Two weeks after being told by federal regulators it needed to raise billions of dollars in order to survive, GMAC LLC received an infusion of $7.5 billion from the U.S. Treasury today to support its business and take over lending for Chrysler dealers and customers. GMAC also will be allowed to issue debt insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., part of a program meant to restore faith in the U.S. credit markets, and named two new board members chosen by the U.S. Treasury.
