Satchel is Backpack on the iPhone done right

Being a productivity nerd who happens to love technology has its benefits. Those of us who are happy to spend a Friday night creating and destroying a list of tasks have absolutely no shortage of quality applications upon which to practice and hone our weirdo craft.

For web-based task management there's the popular and venerable Backpack by 37Signals which, up until very recently, was in bad need of an equally awesome representation on our iPhones. I'm happy to say that the clouds have wandered west and the iPhone-toting Backpack lovers can rejoice at the advent of Satchel [App Store].

Make iTunes and Windows Media Center Work Together

Though Windows Media Center Edition and the Windows Media Player are very good at what they do, there's no native support for iTunes file types. Though this is hardly surprising given the competition between Apple and Microsoft, it's a bummer for those that shop at Apple's popular iTunes online store. In steps MCETunes (various pricing, free demo), a plug-in for MCE that lets you access your iTunes media from within MCE's ten-foot interface (what you see when you're ten feet away an using a remote control).

Berries and exercise don't mix. Misfits are survivors. Why Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody weirds out computers. All that, plus the least convincing liar on the planet in this week's edition of weird science.

KIDO'Z is a Customizable Kid-Friendly Browser

Adobe Air: KIDO'Z is an Adobe-Air-based browser for children, and a great choice if you need to exercise a high degree of control over content and browsing time.

There's no substitute for direct supervision, but if you want to let a kid play on the net in a safe and fenced-off fashion without your having to watchdog every keystroke, KIDO'Z does an admirable job. It's a simplified browser with user-supplied content. The default content is a little on the fluffy side, but thankfully you can hop right in and create your own list of sites within the parental control menu.
