June 5, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Tweeted@E3: Brutal RebuttalYou've got to hand it to the team at Brütal Legend, even when staring in the face of a potential problem leading into release, they can still crack wise. Of course, as you may have already noticed, here at E3 the hilarity works both ways!

Hands-on: Tony Hawk Ride
June 5, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Hands-on: Tony Hawk RideThe most important thing to understand about Tony Hawk Ride is that it's not a Tony Hawk game with a special skateboard peripheral. This is, in a very real sense, a completely new franchise that dispenses with the tropes of the series when they don't suit its needs.

Impressions: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and old flings

Elena Fisher, shrewdly describing herself as "last year's model," is back in Uncharted 2, breaking with the standard serial adventure ethos that values the one-and-done romantic interest over long-term attachment. It may have taken Marion two decades to make her way back to Indy's side, but Elena has swiftly staked a claim as Nathan Drake's true sidekick. The two reunite in Naughty Dog's sequel with the sassy Chloe spicing up the between-the-sheets melodrama. It's a diversion, at least, from the requisite mass murdering that seems to accompany Drake's carefree treasure hunts.

Kingdom Hearts Slips Japanese Sales Chart A Mickey

Japanese gamers snapped up a ton of new titles in Japan this past week as the new Kingdom Hearts game for the Nintendo DS topped charts. The top ten was full of new, including Gyakuten Kenji and... HAWX?

While robust sales for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days likely won't surprise purveyors of Japanese gaming tastes, a top ten appearance from Tom Clancy's HAWX might. The Ubisoft game was just one of eight new releases to score a top ten spot, joining Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Empires as one of two PlayStation 3 games to crack the top third of this week's chart.

Team ICO LittleBigPlanet DLC coming next week

Shadow of the Colossus in LittleBigPlanet? It's been done, but not officially. A new trailer, viewable after the break, found on the Media Molecule website suggests that official Shadow of the Colossus DLC is coming to the game next week -- maybe alongside some Ico stuff, as seen in the recently leaked image. It's unclear whether it's just costumes and props, or whether it'll be an MGS4-style pack, with levels and maybe an extra gameplay addition. We know what we're hoping for.

Top 5 Surprises of E3
June 5, 2009 at 5:12 pm

With E3 2009 in the books, now is the time to do some reflecting on what we've gleaned from this past week. And what better way to kick things off than with a look at the five biggest surprises of a show that was jam-packed with surprises. Even with those that were spoiled ahead of time, it was still difficult to narrow down the list to just five items. Hands-on: Scribblenauts

There's a growing sect of Joystiq writers who are walking away from E3 2009 with the same title constituting their Game of the Show. Surprisingly, it's not a big-budget blockbuster, or a groundbreaking advancement in storytelling, or a bold new method of how we interact with our video games. It's Scribblenauts, an unassuming DS puzzler with a massive lexicon, charming gameplay and, as far as we can tell, a large infusion of impossible technowizardry.

Just Cause 2 Impressions: In Which Everything Explodes, Awesomely

I saw plenty of games this past week. Some good. Some bad. Some worse. But only one game could be the best-looking thing I saw all week. And that game was Just Cause 2.

Just Cause, released a few years back now as a GTA clone set on a sparsely-populated tropical island, was one of those games where you went "eh, nice idea, but really needs a sequel to get it right". And from what I've seen of the sequel so far, it's getting things so, so right.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Takes on E3
June 5, 2009 at 3:36 pm

It's not often that you'd see a late night talk show mention a show like E3, unless it's in the context of sending Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to mock everyone in attendance, but Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is a bit friendlier to the gaming crowd. As such, Jason Sudeikis of SNL and 30 Rock fame was sent to check out what's been going on in Los Angeles this week. Most of what Sudeikis does is pretty hit-or-miss (this is Jimmy Fallon's show we're talking about here), but it's all in good fun as he checks out The Beatles Rock Band, Modern Warfare 2, the PSP Go, and some of the E3 booth babes.

Everything You Need to Know About Project Natal

This E3 was packed with explosive news and announcements, from confirmation of the PSP Go and Sony's motion controls to the whispers of a new Metroid and Zelda. But one of the most startling may have been Microsoft's Project Natal.

On it's simplest level, Project Natal is a straight forward motion control for the Xbox 360, one that doesn't use a controller. But the technology can also be used to sign you into your 360 automatically, let you play classic 360 titles without a controller and even interact with a child-like, uncanny-free artificial intelligence.

Sony Is Working on a UMD Solution for PSP Go

One of the biggest hurdles to getting Playstation Portable owners to upgrade to the recently announced PSP Go is their existing library of UMD games which won't work on the device.

But don't worry, Sony Computer Entertainment is hard at work on a solution.

Wii Remote Wizard Working On Project Natal

Wii Remote Wizard Working On Project Natal

You remember Johnny Lee, right? Sure you do, he's the man who can make magic happen with the Wii Remote. And it seems he's bringing his skills to Microsoft's Project Natal controller.

While Lee is quick to say he doesn't deserve credit for what we saw at E3, he does add, "The part I am working on has much more to do with making sure this can transition from the E3 stage to your living room - for which there is an even larger team of very smart, very hard working people involved." Lee is currently a researcher in the Applied Sciences group at Microsoft.

  • Tetris Creator Skeptical of Project Natal

Venetica: E3 Pretty I Didn't See

I was really excited to finally see DTP Entertainment's Venetica in action at this E3, but they didn't show it to me, so here's some screenshots.

It's probably my biggest disappointment of this E3. I've been following Venetica since the game was first announced. It's an action role-playing game starring the daughter of death, Scarlett, who must do battle with evil forces in order to defeat an evil necromancer and save her father.

Mario, meet Sonic

Listen -- not every game at E3 is a winner. The Joystiq heavyweights get to go play all the big games and interview all of the developer hotshots, and that's the stuff you love reading about. But some of us are down in the trenches, doing all of the demos that no one else wants to do, checking out all the games whose names are read around the schedule planning table, and answered only with the silence of bloggers who have better games to play.

The PSP Go Looks Familiar

We knew that we had seen the PSP Go before — back when Sony called it "Mylo".

The Mylo is a wireless device that can be used to browse the internet. Sales have hardly been amazing, so don't think Sony's decision to use a tweaked Mylo design for the PSP Go is lazy. Oh no, it's thrifty!

So the PSP Go Is Basically a Sony Mylo 2 With Gaming Then? [Gizmodo]

Cops Called Over Resident Evil Cosplay

Cops Called Over Resident Evil Cosplay

Sometimes cosplay is a good thing. Sometimes it's a bad thing — especially when it gets you arrested. That's "Jay", and he was cosplaying as special commando HUNK from Capcom's Resident Evil franchise.

Great costume! So great that the local authorities were altered when the gun-brandishing masked-HUNK walked into a store. A dozen police cars pulled up to the scene, guns drawn.

DS | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games DS Impressions

We take a look at three new events and one new gameplay mode in which Sega and Nintendo characters talk to each other and help each other out. Mass hysteria!

Mario and Sonic had such a blast competing at the Summer Olympics, it seems, that they're back for some wintery competition. During our E3 Demo for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, we got to see a few of the iconic events that the pair (and their respective crews) will be participating in. We also saw a new adventure-style mode that offers an interesting diversion from the sports-themed action.
